NJ American Water News Drop

September 2026

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has approved new water and wastewater rates for New Jersey American Water customers, effective Sept. 15, 2026. The approval supports more than $1.4 billion in ongoing upgrades to strengthen water and wastewater infrastructure across New Jersey.

  • Continued investment: The approved rates support the replacement or rehabilitation of nearly 120 miles of aging main, continued lead service line replacement, and treatment upgrades related to PFAS and other emerging contaminants.
  • Municipal accounts: The new rates apply across customer classes, including municipal franchise service and resale/bulk customers. Individual impact will vary based on customer classification, service type, usage and service area.
  • Customer credit: Eligible water customers will receive a separate $9.88 monthly PFAS Litigation Universal Surcredit, or PLUS, for 12 months beginning in September 2026. For an average residential water customer, the credit will more than offset the approximate $4 monthly rate increase, resulting in an average net bill reduction of nearly $6 per month for 12 months.
